We even got a nice shiny cup which was a nice improvement on the previous years shield. Huge congratulations to all students who sat exams during 2008 and of course it goes without saying what a superb job all the tutors at Riffs do, top stuff fella's keep it up.

A GUITAR school in Stockport has been named the best in the country. 'Riffs Music Academy' at Otterspool, Romiley, is the Registry of Guitar Tutors' guitar school of the year. The award was based on the number of candidates passing the RGT exams, which are endorsed by Sir Paul McCartney, Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and former Shadow Hank Marvin.

Riffs founder Steve Dempsey said: "Receiving the award is just awesome. It is a credit to all the hard work put in by the tutors and students - and proves they're the best. The current popularity of the guitar is known in the trade as a `tidal wave' and it all started with Noel and Liam Gallagher."

Tony Skinner, examinations director for the RGT, said: "The school has been very successful in helping young people progress over the years." Steve set up what was first known as Riffs Guitar School in 2000, with one studio in a commercial unit and a handful of students. The school now has 10 tutors and nearly 300 students in a purpose-built studio space, teaching electric and acoustic guitar, bass, drums or vocals, and students range in age from six to sixty.
