Always D! There's a lot of scope for jamming in D, it suits most styles and moods of music. Not too confusing for keyboardists, plenty of scope for open string usage on guitars, and it's not too taxing on the fingers for soloing in the 5th fret position or the 10th fret. Works well in major and minor modes and creates the oportunity for dropped D tuning for those darker moments in life.

You're always going to get those shouting out Eb but that one fret makes all the difference, in fact it is rumoured that the key of Eb was invented purely for keyboardists as that lovely pentatonic scale is laid out for them with the raised accidentals. They're called accidentals for a reason.

C# is alright in it's minor form but move to the major and it starts sounding a little like a childrens tv theme.

D is the future!

Top stuff Mr Marko Very intresting view on the key of D. I do share your thoughts on the key of D but i noticed you didnt state Major or minor, I would side with the minor although D Major obviously implies it's relavant minor being B minor which is a awsome key for jaming and improvisation check out Dave Gilmours Comfortably Numb solo or Joe Walsh's Hotel California both shining examples of noodles in B minor/D Major

E as it is clearly the superior letter.

This is not really such a comprehensive answer, compared to the argument for D. However i feel this some how is a stronger argument.
